Everyday there is a new story of some celebrity being accused of sexual assault. I think it is much more than that. In the psyche of the public, the character of men is under attack as a whole. Men are not to be trusted, and being framed as sexual predators. This is not a new trend, but I have never seen such flagrant outcry of condemnation of male character. I am aghast to see the willingness of the masses to convict people by their own dissociation, without the need for reliable reason or evidence, and to put pressure on others to go the same. What a senseless way to behave, peer-pressure on steroids.
It is not unlike the witch trials, or the Satanic ritual abuse panic throughout the 1980's and 1990's. The character of all men is under attack. Men cannot be trusted.. Men are predators… This social panic is ostracizing a whole gender. Men are being villainized using the exact same constructs traditionally seen in cases of racism and other '-isms' that divide and separate. It is extremely sickening, and ironic that this panic is perpetuated by people who typically name for the inclusion and acceptance of all individuals. These are the same tactics the politically-correct crowds speak against, repackaged with a new label and different flavor. The target of course is men, and specifically now, their abhorrent and deviant sexuality or behavior. Without evidence and without cause, masses of people are ready to convict, if not only in their minds, any man accused of wrongdoing. All in all, it is greatly concerning to see the trust that is eroding in society, and the disproportionate amount of attention given to these “scandals” in the media. A documentary was made called "Witch Hunt” about several innocent people who were incarcerated after being wrongly convicted during the sexual abuse hysteria of the 1980s. I can hear the echo’s today, “a small cost for safety”, “better safe than sorry”, “all men are predators”.
