I just did a little test: a free news server gives me an average download speed of 75 kB/s (= 600kb/s) (using a real nntp client, of course, and not one of those terrible web interfaces; and commercial servers will be even faster); there is simply no way for a web interface with a 28 kb/s (or even 56 kb/s) modem to be 15 times as fast.

And what "hassle of clicking in each single line" are you talking about? You just highlight the messages you are interested in and tell your newsreader to d/l the attachments — that's all.
