I believe parents need a say at the very least to guide them from unwise decisions that they will inevitably make.

The key word there is guidance. Parents should be expected to provide guidance, and their advice would continue to be valuable and an asset to their kids in a youth liberated society. But there are a few considerations to think about as to why youth libbers argue that parents should not have ultimate authority over their kids.

First of all, yes, kids will inevitably make unwise decisions. But that's part of how they learn. Forcing them not to take risks is going to interfere with that process, and result in them leaving home at 18 with all the life experience of a toddler.

Secondly, and most importantly, parents will also make unwise choices. Many of them make decisions based on personal biases, politics, and beliefs that are not beneficial to their kids. Being older doesn't automatically make you wiser, because there are too many other factors involved. The way so many adults, particularly those who are older, continuously vote against their own interests, and are easily misled by the games that politicians play, is full proof of this. Our heavily gerontocentric society and elected officials do not routinely make wise decisions, making it clear that younger people need to be given the right of suffrage and be brought into the political process.

Thirdly, if one argues that kids should have to listen to their parents even if they have a strong feeling that the parents are wrong, or can even prove their parents are wrong, then that person is arguing that authority is more important than principles, accountability, and doing the right thing. This, we should note, is the same type of thinking that causes so many "wise" adults in the general public to tolerate usually older adults in positions of power routinely breaking the law and getting away with it no matter how much destruction they cause.

Food for thought, my friend. I'll pass you the salt if you want it :-)
