My understanding is that Sappho has never been really understood-the evidence about her is so thin, it's hard to be sure about her bio. However-a lot of her poetry is intended very clearly, in my opinion, for young =early teen & pre-teen girls. I can translate Greek slowly-one of my 'pet' projects is picking my way through her (Greek) text, it's infinitely more beautiful than any translation- a theme I keep seeing is jealousy at another woman over a girl's favors, a very young girl, the way I read it.
