Dante beat me to it, and probably said it better than I could have.

I don't think the problem is that when they hear the word pedophile, they think child molester. I think that when they think pedophile (the person), they think child molester. So no matter what we choose to call ourselves, it's not the word that causes them to think badly of us. It's us they think badly of.
