So, for example, the myth that most instances of child sexual abuse are committed by pedophiles, for instance, would be countered by research showing that ≈90% of these crimes are committed by those without a sexual preference for children, and that most abuse takes place in the home. The myth that pedophilia is rare would be countered by studies indicating that a substantial percentage of the population is at least occasionally attracted to children.
Basically this tells us that true pedophilia is relatively rare compared to situational attraction to minors that some usually adult age attracted adults may experience occasionally. This represents the 90% of non-pedophiles that are involved in child molestation. Most true pedophiles love and care about children and recognize that crossing the line legally would ultimately hurt them, even if the child initially consents. They'd love to be able to change the way that society works, but follow the rules like any other good citizen. We can't take credit on one hand for not being involved in 90% of all child molestations, and then on the other hand claim that all those people with a situational attraction to minors are actually "pedophiles". We should just be honest and forthcoming and explain the difference between us and them and let people make up their own minds based on accurate information, rather than trying to spin it in our favor. |
