Girls in the Little League World Series

Posted by Dante on Friday, August 15 2014 at 11:53:09PM

There are two playing baseball.

The only one I saw ( quite by accident ) is Mo'ne Davis; the star pitcher for Philadelphia.

Now softball is clearly a lesser version of baseball. Its not a variant like tennis, squash, ping pong &tc. It is baseball made less risky for the wee ones. It is one grade up from t-ball.

So why, at an age where girls are competitive with boys, do so few play baseball at the level of the little-league world series?

The answer probably lies in their future.

If they just want to have fun until puberty starts to run-away with them and the bhoys, then baseball is the choice. But if they want to remain competitive throughout their schoolgirl years, or if they want to both play a game and USE the game, then the choice is softball.

There is such a thing as pro-softball. But its not much of a career path. But what does matter is allowing a game you love to pay your way to college. Scholarships cannot be dismissed. And college scouts are a presence at PGF tournaments and ( I presume ) little league.

By the time they hit their college years the young women just aren't as competitive with the young men. This is probably why this softer version of hardball continues to survive.
