It might be a matter of heroes too. Mia Hamm still gets more press than any Softball pro.

And then there's a few movies, Bend It Like Beckham and Gracie come to mind.

It also helps that soccer's rise in popularity within the US is recent enough to coincide with Title IX's influence. There's not a century of it being exclusively masculine the way that the team sports whose popularity predates the automobile tend to be.
