I think culturally, more kids play soccer than baseball/softball, including girls. And also, I think the mechanics of kicking a soccer ball come more naturally to them than throwing/hitting a ball. Like you said, soccer is probably more fun to them. I'd also say it's seen as less of a masculine sport than baseball, so social dynamics might play a part.
