Jimmy Carter was not a great president, but he was a great man.
Recent obituaries have been playing up his role in making craft brewing legal and in deregulating the airline industry - which were useful things he did as president. On the other hand, he established a federal Department of Education that has overseen the biggest decline in education in American history. But he did always attempt to do the right thing. He just wasn't very good at it. Well, none of us are perfect. After leaving office he had one of the better arcs for an ex-president, doing volunteer work for charity. He will be missed. |
