Personally I think she is just being told to keep her eyes open as wide as possible.

I took Spanish 1 and 2 in high school which I don't think helped all that much. What really helped me was learning a list of the 100 most used words and then watching Amy la Nina de la mochilla azul. I'd watch an hour of it every day for several years. Among some of there not as good spanish soap operas. But, I guess that one had a cute girl in it.
