Psychology student here. There is no reliable scientific evidence that psychological disorders have particular, consistent biomedical origins. Even the American Psychiatric Association has acknowledged that scientists have failed to reliably identify biomarkers for these disorders, despite a half-century now of intense research. Not only is psychiatry a scientifically baseless ideology, but it serves a politically conservative function by formalizing social norms and sanctioning deviant behaviors. Basically, it's just a non-democratic, oppressive system of social control. All well-meaning people should wholly reject it and push toward its elimination.

Psychiatric disorders, as listed in the DSM, are merely political constructions. They are not "discovered" via scientific research in the same way that physiological disorders are found by medical scientists. Instead, they are established via fiat by a handful of board members. That homosexuality was removed from the DSM during the height of the gay right's movement of the 70s demonstrates this. Clearly, these disorders have no scientific merit. The DSM is merely a barometer of society's politics vis-à-vis acceptable behavior. Fortunately, this article's authors seem to recognize this somewhat.
