I think its a relatively new phenomenon where kids are now focusing on "Am I a girl or a boy". And, more to the point, it's 100% at today's Society's prompting.
Little girls and boys just don't think of that question. Of course, if there IS a problem with gender identification, then it SHOULD be addressed. Just not with any outside influence. Carl Rogers (*ahem*, a psychologist) focused extensively on that concept (and others.) Wikipedia has a list of his 19 propositions that are the basis of his work. "Do think of yourself as a boy or as a girl?" (Direct influence, forcing a binary answer.) as opposed to "How do you feel about yourself?" (The answer is wide open from "I'm a boy" to "I'm a Huragok.") |
