I'd like to share your optimism in this regard, but history suggests that a better bet is to convince people that we are too dangerous to fuck with. Sometimes the only way to change a person's mind is with a high velocity projectile. I don't wish it to be so, but I can't ignore the evidence - and when our enemies make it clear that one of us has to go, I prefer it to be them.

Those who need to know should be familiar with the economic sanctions that began in 2007. Those who have been paying attention should be aware of a couple other incidents, also.
