Structurally, psychology/psychiatry are heavily entangled with Big Pharma and other corporate interests as well as the therapeutic state. The top-down, conservative structure of groups such as the APA and the fact that pathologizing that which "society" fears are naturally conducive to authoritarian tendencies. However, there are also wonderful people who have the courage to think for themselves and idealistic enough not so easily allow the greed of special interests to distort their research and practice.
