After all, if you do something that you think is for someone's wellbeing (sparing them criminal convictions and the guilt of crime or hurting someone) and for the wellbeing of society, it is nice.
If they legitimately think he's unstable enough to break the law then it's not a mean thing to do. The problem would be a lack of communication or understanding if he is actually not.
