Agree on all counts except who should get the death penalty.
Most of the harm caused by drugs comes from the prohibition thereof, rather than from the drugs themselves. The rate of drug addiction in the United States has not changed in over a century, but the rate of associated violence certainly has - therefore, if anyone should get the death penalty for their involvement in drugs, it should be the Drug Warriors, not the drug traffickers. Otherwise: treason and espionage if it is likely to lead to the death of an innocent person, multiple murders or extreme brutality (like the man who raped a woman and cut off her arms) can all get the death penalty in my book. A single, ordinary murder - no, nor any other crimes that don't involve murder, attempted murder, or extreme brutality (such as cutting off limbs). Last year a Chinese official who headed up the Chinese counterpart to the Food and Drug Administration was executed for accepting bribes to look the other way while companies sold fake pharmaceuticals, which led to the deaths of a number of people. Assuming the prosecution was sound, I can approve of that too, as he essentially allowed murder by purposeful inaction. That about sums up my views on the Death Penalty. |
