I cannot emphasize this enough: open an e-mail account, preferably in another country to make it as difficult as possible to trace you, and send & receive your e-mails from there.
It also gives you the advantage of being able to access your e-mail from anywhere, even if you are not near your computer.

Fastmail has a good reputation; however a court order can force them to open up, which is the real beauty of an off-shore account: I'd like to see PJ get a court order from a Romanian or Chinese or Russian court.
