Fairness

Implicit in your comment is the assumption that life should be fair -- that it should conform to the "essential decency of the middle class" (quoting Dr. Hunter Thompson).
However, life is anything but fair, and there is no reason to assume that it should be. Given my circumstances as an example, I am not confined to a wheelchair or suffering a terminal illness (as many are). That is not "fair" -- someone with multiple sclerosis no more deserves that fate than I, mine.
I mention this because I think the presumption that life should be fair, the playing field level, etc., is a source of tyranny in itself. What is true is that life is unfair, and we must all make the best of what we are endowed with in this place. I do not resent it or have any particular feelings about it.
