Well, I've had some fairly positive experieces with sex-offender councelling services, although I'm sure it's a bit of a lottery as to which therapist you get and how good they are! The main problem seems to be funding - as I was never convicted of, or ever actually arrested for any crime, noone seems prepared to pay the cost of the "treatment". Apparently if I was an actual sex-offender then all sorts of things would kick in and various resources would be available but as I'm not...
All I would say though, is that some councellors are better suited to individuals than others. The first I saw was used to working with sex offenders released from prison and half the time I felt like she was following a script at times which didn't seem to apply to my situation. She was very nice but had strange ideas - at first even thinking I could be "trained" to fancy adult women!!!! The second I saw was much more realistic and had a background in general psychotherapy rather than specific and was able to see me as a far more rounded individual with complex issues. She stated her aim as helping me accept myself for who I am and get my issues with my sexuality in to persepective so I've not obsessivly worrying about it all the time! All in all, it's a mixed bag. |
