A quote from sptimes.com:
Computer experts hired by the state uncovered enough evidence from Schurgard's encrypted files to charge him with 616 counts of possessing child pornography. In February, after five years of solitary confinement in jail awaiting trial, he pleaded guilty to five counts of possession, three counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child and one count of soliciting lewd and lascivious conduct by a child under 18. Did they really break the encryption on his computer? And why was in solitary confinement for 5 years? Is that how long it took them to break the encryption on his computer? And if the government has no evidence because of encryption, will they really hold a suspect in solitary confinement, for years, (or forever), until they manage to break the encryption? According to safefiles.htm, found in the archive of Steve's old website, he was using bestcrypt. Bestcrypt, as far as I know, is not broken. Either he used a very weak password, which was guessed using a dictionary attack after 5 years, or the article is lying when they say that the police broke the encryption. - Heartfallen |
