Didn't Screwtape advise . . .

I forget the specifics, but I seem to recall that Screwtape advised his nephew on how to tempt believers, and the techniques made good use of distracting believers into making believers emphasize the unimportant things at the expense of first principles, and generally leading believers to do unconscionable things under the guise of religious duty.
