A couple points: It's fine to let the kids have the Lego instruction booklets, as long as they get beyond them. Whenever I got a new lego set, I would put it together as per the instructions, sometimes learn a few new tricks from it, and then never assemble it that way again.
Also: racial prejudice in the U.S. - it still exists, but outsiders coming to the South are often surprised that it isn't what they expected. One visitor I knew was surprised to find that blacks and whites generally got along together quite well, on friendly terms. The prejudices and disparities are often subtle and not ill-intentioned.
Of course, plenty of other prejudices still common in the U.S.
