The band Hawkwind are a fascinating Sci-Fi band combining elements of psychedelic, metal and synthesizer-rock. There's considerable give and take between them and genre author Michael Moorcock. On the one hand, they adapted Moorcock's fantasy antihero Elric into a double-album rock opera Chronicle of the Black Sword*. On the other Moorcock has written the band into several of his novels including the Swinging London psychedelic apocalypse Jerry Cornelius novels.
( * Note: this is the same sword sung about in Blue Oyster Cult's song Black Blade, penned by the author himself. ) Their most famous move came when they got sick and tired of their lead singer's legal and drug issues and kicked him out of the band. Lemme Killmister took a little Hawkwind song he wrote called Motorhead, formed a band with that name and went on to fame and fortune; leaving Dave Brock et al as footnotes in his CV. As for songs called Lolita, also include one by the Spanish-language gal Belinda off her album Carpe Diem. The album's packaging has a very Japanese gothic Lolita look with a few obligatory Alice visual cues. Dante |
