Pedophilia is one of the more common paraphilias; the large worldwide market for child pornography suggests that it is more frequent in the general population than prison statistics would indicate.

Once again the conflation of disparate notions.

Firstly, whether it is a paraphilia or an orientation it is very common. Studies on aesthetic preferences and sexual attraction within the majority non-criminal population show that it is more common than believed, and perhaps even more common than homosexuality.

The "large worldwide market" for CP is irrelevant to the prevalence of pedophilia within the general population. Furthermore inquiries reveal the oft-cited statistics to be an invention. Despite their exposure as lies various authorities continue to repeat them as factual or equivocate about their reasons to continue citing false numbers.

What can be demonstrated is that before the advent of the internet, the main producer and distributor of CP within the United States were various law-enforcement wings of the Federal Government. Materials which were at the time legal in various Northern European countries were reproduced, advertised and circulated through the mail. While the motive was "sting" operations; many of which were so aggressive in forcing unsolicited material on the consumers of legal pornography as to be thrown out; the Fed were nonetheless the major purveyor.

However while distribution has shifted from an print and mail-order model to an online one, so too have the definitions of what constitutes CP. Many jurisdictions have all-but thrown out the "artistic merit" defense or the requirement for the depiction of sexual acts or "lewd and lascivious" depictions. And by including such vague elements as "focus" on the genitals, or including pseudo-pictures and drawings which don't document any child involvement; they inflate the amount by including material no court would've defined as CP only a few decades prior.

And by comparing false CP statistics to a false pedophile population ( incarcerated offenders ) while still citing the term "paraphilia" which has nothing to do with either; the author feigns credibility.

The onset of pedophilia usually occurs during adolescence.

Coinciding with the onset of all sexual orientations. In fact, its exact coincidence with the development of sexual orientation in most everyone with multiple orientations should lead to the conclusion that it is an orientation.

Casting aside body-image disorders which appear as body-consciousness is socially foisted on adolescents, there are few other disorders aside from Schizophrenia whose onset are so linked to puberty and adolescence. Schizophrenia usually arrives in late adolescence as the brain is undergoing its final chemical changes to adulthood. Whereas pedophilia arrives usually in early puberty with the first stirrings of sexual orientation. But its arrival can be earlier or later, almost invariably linked to the awareness of orientation by the individual.

The author associates "acting out" with stress levels. This also holds true for most who act out inappropriately, but fails to demonstrate a link between "acting out" and either the paraphilia or orientation definitions of pedophilia.

And in discussing "recidivism" rates they are drawing upon information mostly relating to situational non-pedophile offenders. Recedivism only applies to criminal acts, not to orientations. While the criminal justic system's rehabilitation model is oriented towards preventing reoffense, the APA refutes the science-illiterate notion that sexual orientations can be changed. The conflation of criminal offense and sexual orientation only serves to inhibit proper treatment and optimal support for healthy function among both, and increases the likelihood of mistreatment, misdiagnosis and confusion among those who discover pedophile attractions within themselves.
