Thanks for introducing me to a new word, mesophile. I had to look that up. As I understand it, the human definition is attraction to middle aged people. A type of chronophilia.
Speaking from experience and observation, mesophilia may he more common (and normal) than most people think. I know that as a boy and a teen I often had crushes on teachers (or the cafeteria lady). Boys love to look at girly magazines, often having a secret stash. Back in the day, most teen boys had the Farah Fawcett poster.
Girls, likewise seem to be attracted to men and often claiming them as "mine".
Back in the 80s, my lesbian roommate used to tell me that she loved hugging women more than men.
As you say, Kim Darby may have been the right choice for Gene, either due to his own views or censorship norms of the day.
Then again, in the The Brady Bunch season 4 episode "Love and the Older Man," Jan tells Marcia the perfect man for her would be 10 years older. This would make Marcia around 16 or 17 and Dr Vogel about 27.
As for miscegenation, there was the letent romance between Uhura and Suku as seen in "Mirror, Mirror". But then again, the mostly white audience saw them a "just" African and Asian.
And if we're going in to Gene's likes and dislikes, we never saw a threesome. I recall reading about a threesome involving Roddenberry, Mabel Barrett, and Nichele Nichols.
I still wonder how the scene where Miri is getting giggly around Kirk if Miri were played by Maureen McCormick.
