It does not matter how law abiding and nice you are, there is a witch hunt against paedophiles, if you are found to be one you will be fired from your job, harassed on the streets, cut off from friends and family and maybe even physically attacked. Mr Thornton has done nothing wrong but he has already been fired from his job, worse, nobody is going to employ him as a public face of anything ever and probably will be called names and harassed on the streets by any idiot who feels like it and nobody will care, if you visit a site like girlchat, boychat or lifeline take privacy seriously.

In this case he made multiple mistakes, the biggest one was accessing Lifeline while on a plane, I guess he was busy he had a little spare time and decided to access it believing he was doing nothing illegal and without thinking clearly about the consequences of anybody linking him with paedophilia.

I don't know about his computer set up, other than it looks like a Mac computer in the screenshots, but he should have had a safety belt too so that if the laptop is ever stolen nobody can access the data, and the way to make sure nobody can access your data, not even law enforcement, is by fully encrypting the hard drive with Veracrypt, https://veracrypt.io/ for Windows and LUKS2 for Linux, if in Linux it must be done during set up, if you already have Linux installed and wish to fully encrypt it you must re-install and choose "encrypt drive" during set up.

I am sorry about him, on the positive side this is a way to make others aware that pedophile support chatrooms exist, while 99% are going to be trolling and disrupting there will be a one 1% who might feel happy to find a support place that does not treat them like criminals.
