The problem is how we raise children. We try to keep stupid until the magical age of 18. We end up with nonfunctional adults. Trying to maintain "purity" and "innocence" is how we end up with teens who think that everything is "ewwwwwww".
The first thing you have to do is train children to be adults. What we're ending up with are adults who have been trained to be children.
