While a small number of paleocons in the West are still fine with child marriage, I can't think of ANY who would approve of it without mutual consent. THAT principle in western law goes back to at least the middle ages.
POSSIBLY some of the Mormon fundamentalists, for young women in their early teens? But even Mormon tradition demands mutual consent. Now for some cultures from parts of Africa or Asia, probably.... As for feminism, the West hasn't had a patriarchy in over 500 years if it ever did. Accounts from visitors 500 years ago and more commented on what they considered the surprising amount of power and influence that women had, and Western Europeans 200 years ago marveled at how much power and influence English women had, and the English marveled at how much power and influence American women had. So to claim that the Anglo-American tradition in particular was ever patriarchal is utter nonsense. Yes, tradition and custom had men and women having separate spheres of influence, and no doubt there was not perfect equality, but the notion that there was social oppression that only operated in one direction is not at all creditable. It is also worth considering whether the people who established those traditions understood some things about human nature which we have forgotten. They did not have the luxury that we do to be wealthy enough to ignore large parts of human nature. |
