(From the Three Stooges)
Several years ago, I gave one of the simplest logic puzzles I know to several AI that were in development at the time. None of them could solve it. In a certain bank, the positions of cashier, manager, and teller are held by Brown, Jones, and Smith, though not necessarily respectively. The teller, who was an only child, earns the least. Smith, who married Brown sister, earns more than the manager. What position does each man fill? Today, ChatGPT and others solve it in just seconds. However, here is a more complicated one for them: Six presenters—Aria, Ben, Cass, Dev, Faye, and Gio—are each giving a different workshop (astronomy, botany, coding, drawing, electronics, filmmaking) at a weekend convention. All six sessions are in the same hall, starting at 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00 (one per hour). Each presenter brings a distinct beverage (tea, coffee, lemonade, cocoa, smoothie, soda), uses a different prop (telescope, microscope, laptop, sketchbook, soldering iron, camera), and wears a different badge color (red, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange). Clues: 1. The telescope is used in the earliest session. 2. The coding workshop starts exactly one hour after the presenter with the blue badge begins. 3. The botany workshop uses a microscope. 4. The drawing workshop is immediately before the session of the person who drinks cocoa. 5. The presenter at 12:00 uses a soldering iron and wears neither purple nor yellow. 6. The filmmaking workshop is at the latest start time. 7. Beverages: The person who drinks soda starts later than both the green and blue badges; the lemonade drinker starts at an odd hour. 8. The person with the red badge starts earlier than the lemonade drinker but later than the person who drinks tea. 9. Aria starts before both the coding and electronics workshops. 10. Ben’s session is followed immediately by drawing. 11. Cass teaches neither coding nor astronomy. 12. Dev starts after Cass. 13. Faye does not present at 09:00 or 10:00. 14. Gio wears purple. 15. The person who uses a laptop drinks coffee. 16. The camera is used four hours after the person with the red badge begins. 17. The electronics workshop is not at 10:00. 18. The astronomy presenter drinks tea. 19. Faye wears green and drinks the smoothie. ChatGPT solves that. The AI Singularity is rapidly approaching. True, today, there are blatant limits to AI (for example, resolving sociatal/personal moral dilemmas). And, so too, today there isn't an AI imperative to place its own goals above us humans. But, once that does happen, or... rather... if humans allow it to occur, humans will rapidly become extinct here on Earth (or anywhere there is an AI Singularity.) ![]() |
