I feel like Lolita is easily misread. But a close reading of it will reveal that Lolita is very anti-pedo in all aspects. Perhaps it's self-hate, perhaps it's just plain hate of child molesters and those who have a thing for kids.
I agree, Nabokov probably didn't have an eye for little girls. He probably, like most men, found mid-range double digit girls somewhat attractive. IDK. But I think he wasn't into them the way Humbert Humbert is into them. He condemns HH in so many ways. Again, it could be self-hate, but I think it wasn't really that. Go listen to the first couple episodes of The Lolita Podcast. The host's reading of the podcast generally agrees with my own sentiments. She addresses correspondence she ends up getting from a number of MAPs in one of the episodes too. And she's fairly even-handed even though you can tell she isn't comfortable. Tolerance, not acceptance. But I, for one, will take it. PS: If there's other books by Humbert exploring the them of kiddolust by the best American writer from Russia, I haven't yet read them. Feel free to disabuse my notions. It's fine. We all approach books with eyes that are capable of finding different nuggets of truth. |
