As a young man I sometimes said "when others are joyless, I am painless". This doesn't mean that I was a selfish person who did not allow joy to others, it means that I was often an unhappy and joyless guy, and when others seemed to rejoice and celebrate, I was an outsider and felt even more pain than usually.
