It was a certain James R. Thrane who first detected the use of Pinamonti by Joyce and published his findings in 1962 in A James Joyce Miscellany: Third Series ("Joyce's Sermon on Hell: Its Sources and Its Backgrounds"). Ever since any decent annotated edition of APAYM carries this information (I took it from Don Gifford's classic and indispensable Joyce Annotated).
