From the references I presume you are referring to the title character of the American sitcom "Alice" that ran from 1976 to 1985.
In which case, it's been a long time since I saw any episodes so I don't recall much about it or her. But while I was sitting in a waiting room recently I did happen to see an old episode of one of the cowboy themed shows from the 1950s or 1960s - and this episode featured suffragettes and the chief suffragette portrayed as both strong and overly emotional (just like a woman!) in turns.... And I can't help think that we have both lost something and gained something over the years. These preachy old shows seem rather clunky and naive to me now, portraying various ideas both too positively and too negatively at the same time, in ways that just seem childish to me now. It was a kind of surreal experience stepping into the past like that. |
