I wonder if the general societal consensus that children are innocent, also contributes to at least some children growing up with self-hatred. They know they fall short of the "innocence" standard that all kids supposedly just naturally adhere to. Many kids will not realize that the "innocence" standard is bunk, and instead think there's something wrong with themselves.

Maybe that's part of the reason there are so many broken people in the world.
