That was a huge miscalculation on their part.

If one goes around making enemies, eventually they might notice that - and do something about it.

If polar opposite ideologies of roughly equal power both make a third group their enemy, then even if that third group is somewhat weak in themselves those polar opposite ideologies have just made them incredibly powerful.

Perhaps some day people will learn not to make enemies without a good reason to do so.

It seems unlikely, but it's a nice thought.
