The first part of this, where you said NATO should have been disbanded around 1990, I agree with. But your later statement that '[Russia] was never punished when it was weak in the 1990s for the crimes of the USSR, and so Putin, who may not have shown signs of militarism initially, but come on, he is a former KGB agent; was allowed into power' is wide of the mark, I think. In a sense it WAS punished by being given no help to transition to a decent social democracy and THAT is what helped to bring Putin to power. When you win a war (in this case the cold war) punishing your adversary is precisely what you should NOT do. It is a mistake that has been made many times throughout history. (Another example would be the harsh reparations imposed on Germany at the end of World War One, which created the conditions for the rise of Hitler.)
