It would have cost him nothing to keep the statues - could have charged whatever he wanted for visas, so people coming to help restore the statues would be (indirectly) helping reduce the hunger of his people he's claiming. More tourists, more money being put into the local economy as they spend while they're there.

Honestly, it would have been better if he destroyed them in a blind rage. At least that would have made some sense.
