It is a little exaggerated but overall true. In most of the USA, internet and sometimes cellphone coverage are monopolies or at least very dominant actors. They do maintain this monopoly through lobbying. Of course the lack or minimization of competition makes for a worse service. That is why American internet has fewer connectivity facilities and is slower than in basically every rich country. That is also why the percentage of users is low for rich country standards. Even though the USA were the first to develop the internet and are still where most websites are located, despite the exponential growth of mainland China.
