What really happened that the definitions of autism and Asperger's were not only merged into an idiotic "autistic spectrum", they were also made so vague that these words became almost meaningless. If you apply the strict definition of autism, anybody posting on the internet "I am autistic" (how often have I seen this) is simply lying. And any shy nerd these days self-diagnoses as having Asperger's, which in its original conception borders on idiot savant.

Something similar occurred in the US in the mid-20th century with the definition of schizophrenia; by the 1970s, textbooks in psychiatry and clinical psychology openly admitted that 50 years of American schizophrenia research were basically worthless. It's not rare to read in biographies of people living in that period that at some point of their lives they were diagnosed with schizophrenia although they showed none of the symptoms (one example is Charlie Parker: heroin withdrawal was diagnosed as schizophrenia).

As I have said, I have watched several interviews with Hannah Hays, and she is definitely not autistic.
