A main reason why people retain attorneys is that they are experts on procedure, i.e.: https://www.law.cornell.edu/rules/frcrmp

It's easy for a layman to make a small mistake and have that seriously screw up their case - or even to lose their case. Don't expect a lot of, or any, forgiveness when you're pro se.
