8 grams of lead lightly wrapped in copper, 9 mm in diameter, traveling at about 1,200 feet per second will take just over 9 thousandths of a second to travel ten feet and then traverse somebody's body, sternum to spine. An eye blink takes about 33 times that long.
Usain Bolt holds the world's record in the 100 meter dash traveling at 34 feet per second and would need about an eye blink to get across that 10 feet. I placed top in my class on the 50 yard target range although I did it with an M1911 .45 ACP. Later, in civilian life, I regularly practiced with Browning's 9 mm. |
