I'll need to locate that if she has a footnote to the passage. The bright line between childhood and adulthood was a misnomer, at least according to sources I read and could still share. Even though they came from a French perspective I think they do mention English law. There may have been a law around the 1200's, but these sources claim the idea of childhood being something separate only came about among the common folk about the 1500's around the time of Shakespeare. I'm going to have plenty of time to look things up soon.

It's astonishing to most people today that through most of human history there really was no concept of a differentiation between youth and adulthood. In fact, I can remember our sociopath PJ trolls with their weird obsessions with Greek and Roman gods calling it absurd that this was the case. Gifted kids went to colleges in medieval times with older individuals, or became live-in apprentices to skilled craftsmen, musicians and artists. What might have taken place in exchange could be anyone's guess I suppose.

These days I must admit that I'm feeling a bit conflicted about that clouding of the distinction between child and adult, especially where Hollywood's been busy turning adults into fans of endless vapid superhero films as one instance. It's a little enraging to me personally, since to me it looks like the plotted dumbing down of adult society, along with all the scripted crapola on the television presented as spontaneous reality. Somebody as usual will be offended by my opinions, but I truly do not care to coddle the triggered anymore at the sake of my perspective on things. They can simply deal with it, and I hope others can manage to do the same with their own thoughts.

I think much of what you mention about the insistence of girls not really knowing that they want sex is actually rooted in the tenets of major religions that she is to remain chaste before marriage, and as we know, the legal age of marriage continues to get pushed higher and higher over the decades and centuries.

We'd be remiss to not admit, though, that things like chivalry and acting like a gentleman continue to fall by the wayside, helped along as usual by things like Hollywood and the music industry which glorify acting like primal animals out for oneself. I'll be the first to admit that old fashion tv and music were pretty cheesy and not realistic, but the further you take popular culture down the gutter, the more ridiculous the rules to protect young people have to become. There's a whole lot of animals out there today who just don't care about anything but themselves, and who take what they can get, interpret kindness as weakness, etc. etc..

And there's good people like many of us who adore the opposite of sweet innocence so much that we end up being categorized as the very worst of those people who just want to use others. They don't understand. It's a cryin' shame that we're seen that way. And it's even more inexcusably heinous that they forcibly try to brainwash them later that a shared experience wasn't real.

If you remember Still, She Haunts Me, I had a funny story about that book. I was selling some books to a used bookstore once and got a little concerned that the scowly-faced feminist looking them over might react to that one. She clearly didn't recognize it, but the title was probably appealing to her, not realizing the intolerable patriarchal musings of a classic male-female love at her fingertips, so she gave me a good price on it without looking beyond the title:)

I'll try to find some of those intriguing quotes soon.
