Customs that lasted for millennia were so thoroughly destroyed in the 20th century that most people don't even know they existed.

Look up the Western European Marriage Pattern sometime. What we think of as "normal" ages in relationships are only about 500 years old, and until the 20th century were almost entirely restricted to Western Europe and its colonies. For that matter, the idea of marrying for love only dates to the early 19th century. (Loving the person one is married to is a separate issue from marrying FOR love.)

This is not to say that these customs were good or bad - but certainly they could not have caused as much damage as people today claim, or humanity would not have made it this far.
