A seven-year-olds' receptive vocabulary is much larger than their expressive vocabulary. They can understand anywhere between 20,000 to 30,000 words, but can probably only speak 3,000 to 4,000 of them.
Now, put that same seven-year-old in a new environment with a completely different language (one outside Her language family like, say, English and Japanese) and, assuming complete immersion, by the time She is eight, She'll be conversational and, by the time She is nine, She will have between 20,000 to 30,000 words in that second language. As my post's subject indicates, children are hardwired to acquire knowledge and skills. A 40 year old cannot do this. Acquiring a new language with that depth at that age is possible but it will take, on average, 3 to 4 times as long. Now, if you watch and listen to Anastasia carefully, you can detect some of Her errors. Nonetheless, you will also detect Her passion for what She is doing. She bounced to the music. She knew where Her mistakes were just as Andropov knew and smiled at. But, they were Her mistakes and not Her parents. Children who have great skills yet do not want them always show their distaste and regret by how they perform those skills. You just have to know how to see where they are in their heads. |
