Is not required by the faithful.

On November 18, 1978, a total of 918 people in Guyana died thinking that exact same way.

David Koresh claiming to be its final prophet in 1993, joined the Branch Davidians, based outside Waco, Texas. Here he competed for dominance with another leader named George Roden, until Roden was jailed for murdering another rival.

On March 26, 1997, 39 people participated in a mass suicide, a coordinated series of ritual suicides, in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft following Comet Haleā€“Bopp.

This is not to say that God does not exist. This is not to say that God was not sitting on the Comet Hale-Bopp. This is to say that the methodology used by these people to make their lethal decisions was flawed. Not having proof is often what you are left with. But, faith is correctly applied only when there is an absence of conflicting evidence or countering proofs in any specific claim.

The four legged chair over there only has three legs. The probability that it will not hold my (copious) weight is high because I know a bit about structural engineering. Therefore, I will not choose to sit in it (or, at least, I will test my theory.) However, my lack of faith in that chair fails me because, unknown to me, there is an invisible wire holding it in place and the chair WILL take my weight safely.

The four legged chair over there has four legs but one leg is invisibly broken. If I should sit in it, I will fall. But, I have NO evidence that it has a broken leg so, my faith in my eyes leads me to accept the chair. I sit in it and, as you can expect, I fall. WTF?

"God said it; I believe it; that settles it."

Who said that God said it? David Koresh?

Why is it when a falling rock narrowly misses your head, it's a miracle; but when it does hit your head, is that a miracle, too?
