A feature of all old time carnivals was the "blow hole", the outlet of the fan cooling the motor of the ferris wheel. When girls (we're talking about preteens and early teens here) walked past or over it, their skirts would blow upwards. It became obvious that many men were coming to the midway just to watch this, and so benches were provided for them. A boy was even hired specifically to sell refreshments to these gentleman admirers of the little ladies. He could even make some extra cash by holding their seat whenever one of them went to the restroom.
