I once knew a girl

Or, should I say, she once had me.

Ok, she was a teen. I was in my 20's. We were coworkers. She was blond and overweight, with (not to be harsh) a somewhat piggly-looking German nose. She was also somewhat slow in her behavior, drugged out on some pills parents give their kids, a strange blend of half-coherence but with astounding occasional insight which always came as a shock to people.

You'd have to say something extra-interesting for her dull face to light up and give you a moment of exquisite clarity. Invited to one of her parties once, I saw that she lived in a giant home right on the golf course. There was a decked-out lower-level room dedicated entirely to pool, with a table that must have cost thousands. I loved pool, so that's where I quickly found myself. I watched how this party really got going, but how she herself was sorta just present in the background there. She was giving all she could think to give to others, knowingly perfectly well that she was also being used by all around her save perhaps for just one or two.

There was an even younger girl who worked at this place. The only person who ever noticed that I liked her was the one who usually seemed oblivious to everything. She hinted to me that she knew I liked the younger girl, without any sort of judgment about it. I still felt a little embarrassed, as I had tried REALLY hard not to let anyone else notice, and I thought I was pretty good at keeping my cards close to the vest as they say.

One Valentine's day, I found a card with my name on it at work. It had a photo of an actual pig standing and wearing wings on the cover. Inside, it said, Happy Valentine's Day, (Eeyore), from the soul member of the lonely hearts club. There was no name signed, and I instantly knew who it was from. We smiled at one another that day, but said nothing. It was many years ago, and I still treasure the card.
