It was JohnCon, the student anime convention, that invited me to be a guest. It was promoted on their 2019 schedule and the university didn't have a problem with it. Much of the discussion was about Anglo-American cultural prejudice against intergenerational relationships (many of the students are from Asian countries), and how this aspect of my work had sparked controversy. Most admitted that it would barely be noticed by anyone reading my work in Japan.
In a similar vein, a friend of mine is a filmmaker in Japan who also works in the Junior Idol industry. He tells me that some there are getting quite offended by the Olympics Committee demanding that all schoolgirl and loli images be removed from Tokyo in time for the 2020 Games there. I'm not suggesting that Japan is pedo heaven or any such nonsense. They have strict laws against sex with children as well (though with teens it's somewhat more acceptable). But I do believe that much of the hysteria we're seeing is caused by Western (especially American) culture attempting to impose its own mores on the rest of the world. • ( http link ) WEIRD ADVENTURES: THE DANIEL RUMANOS FILES [Anonymouse] |
