Having different ideas introduced is a good thing! Ethan's ideas are not "different." They are mainstream. They are nothing that we haven't all heard literally thousands of times before, in just about every conceivable medium we can think of. I understand you want to point out that Ethan shouldn't be dismissed out of hand for going against the consensus of this board, and that's fine, but let's not fail to call his ideas what they are, or worse, let's not call them something they aren't (e.g., "different," "alternative," etc.). It's utterly impossible for anyone living in our society today not to be exposed to Ethan's mainstream ideas. The same cannot be said for the pro-choice ideology, however. So, as I said in the subject line, let's call a spade a spade. And let's not forget that Ethan's advantage over us is staggeringly immense, not the other way around. Interfering with the usual habits and behaviours some places are likely to develop is certainly a good wake-up call that there are other elements to take into consideration and that, in this case, we aren't the only pedophiles around with different points of views. I reiterate: We could develop all the "habits and behaviors" we want during the tiny percentage of the time we visit this board, but it's still not going to stop us from running into Ethan's point of view just about every where else we turn our attention towards in this world. And I reiterate: Ethan's ideas are not "different," but fully mainstream. He has the advantage, and we should not mistake him for some type of underdog simply because there is one or two places in the world where his view will not enjoy a consensus. Is it that not interesting and makes you wonder how often the pot gets stirred here, compared to other places and how such influences in either weakening, changing, or fortifying ideals and sub-cultures? The pot gets stirred here often enough, because we allow all points of view to be discussed, drawing the line only at advocating the breaking of the law or throwing mindless invective at each other. As a mod, I have actually defended Ethan's presence here on more than one occasion in the past, since he wasn't violating our rules. If you're a MAP in today's day and age, it's utterly impossible not to have our personal pot stirred on an almost daily basis. The MAP/Kind boards are not the sum total of our lives, but for many of us, they are the only part of our lives where we can truly be ourselves and enjoy some semblance of mental ease. Let us also keep in mind that just because we disagree with Ethan, it doesn't necessarily mean we are implying that we want him and his viewpoint gone from within our walls. I can't speak for everyone here on that, of course, but I do not personally want him gone. Nevertheless, Ethan should be thanking us, not the other way around, for these idea exchanges, because he finds his views challenged by truly alternative opinions far less often than the pro-choicers do, and in far less places than we do. |
